Custom-Made Orthotics

Orthotics are shoe inserts that are intended to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern. Orthotics are not truly or solely “arch supports,” although some people use those words to describe them, and they perhaps can best be understood with those words in mind. They perform functions that make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient, by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

Chiropodists and physicians prescribe orthotics as a conservative approach to many foot problems or as a method of control after certain types of foot surgery; their use is a highly successful, practical treatment form. Orthotics take various forms and are constructed of various materials. All are concerned with improving foot function and minimizing stress forces that could ultimately cause foot deformity and pain.

Foot orthotics fall into three broad categories: those that primarily attempt to change foot function, those that are primarily protective in nature, and those that combine functional control and protection.

They are prescribed to successfully treat conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis & heel spurs (pain in the arch &/or heel)
  • Achilles tendinitis or bursitis
  • Ball-of-foot pain
  • Shin splints
  • Ankle instability (recurring sprains)
  • Bunions
  • Neuromas (numbness, tingling or burning sensation of the toes)
  • Knee pain
  • Arthritis
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Lower back pain

At Foot Fitness we take an impression of the feet using plaster casting while the patient is non-weight bearing. This method has been proven to produce the most successful devices compared to the foam box method of casting or computer-digitized images of the foot.

We will provide the prescription and biomechanical assessment that is required for insurance purposes upon completion. There is no need to visit your physician.

Customized Sandals and Orthopaedic Shoes

At Foot Fitness we have a selection of customized sandals. A custom orthotic is manufactured from a plaster cast of your foot and becomes the foot bed of the sandal. We also have a small selection of orthopaedic shoes manufactured by Dr. Comfort.

Compression Hosiery

Compression stockings are specialized hosiery designed to increase venous blood flow. They apply significant pressure on the legs, ankles and feet. Compression socks are tightest at the ankles and gradually become less constrictive towards the knees or thighs.

They are usually prescribed by your family physician to treat conditions such as:

  • Tired, aching legs
  • Swelling in the feet, ankles and legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Lymphedema
  • Phlebitis
  • Pregnancy

Even in a healthy person, wearing compression socks on flights 5 hours or greater helps reduce the risk of clots forming in the legs while in flight. Many flight attendants and pilots wear them regularly as prevention.

Diabetic Socks

Diabetic socks are non-binding and non-elasticized socks which are designed so as to not constrict the foot or leg. They are made to be unrestrictive of circulation. Another beneficial feature is that they have seamless toe-closures to reduce pressure and blistering.

Thermal Socks

Infracare Bio material socks are useful for patients that have cold feet due to conditions such as Diabetes, Raynaud’s Phenomenon and circulatory problems. They actually increase the temperature of the feet by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius. In addition, they are made of a constriction free design and seam free finish for added comfort.
